It was pitch-dark when she turned into the street but she’d been there enough times to know exactly where the house was. Trotting silently along, she came to Bedloe’s front door, used a key to open it, then stepped inside the building. The frantic search began.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
Robert Colbeck was as good as his word. He caught the earliest train back to Dorset. After a night back in his own home, he was both refreshed and reassured. Madeleine was in good health and good spirits. His surprise visit had given her a tremendous boost and he was quick to acknowledge that it came as a result of an order from Edward Tallis. Over the years, the superintendent’s orders had usually taken him away from Madeleine and he’d never expected to be sent back to her. It was proof that there was – notwithstanding his multiple defects – a glimmer of sympathy somewhere deep inside Tallis. Wanting to reflect at leisure on the joy of his reunion, Colbeck steeled himself to forget it for a while. Rail travel was thinking time. To all intents and purposes, Madeleine didn’t exist. His brain was occupied by a series of murder suspects, each one waiting in line for closer examination.
When the train eventually reached the stretch of the line known jocularly as Castleman’s Corkscrew, he realised that it was an appropriate description of the case. During the two days he and Leeming had been in Dorset, they had gone in a series of bewildering circles that burrowed deeper and deeper into the mystery. Colbeck wondered how long it would be before the corkscrew had been turned to its fullest extent and could finally be withdrawn by force. Which of the names they’d identified as suspects would pop out of the bottle?
For the most part, he ignored the landscape that scudded past him. When the train reached Leonard’s Bridge, however, he began to look out of the window properly. Though the next scheduled stop was Wimborne, his primary interest was in West Moors. He expected to see Michael Tullidge standing beside one of the crossing gates and to catch a glimpse of the actual spot where the corpse was discovered. In fact, he saw rather more than he’d anticipated. Tullidge was there but so was Edward Tallis and they were deep in conversation.
